Good news for staffing levels in 2008
As the press is pushing us toward a recession much like it drug us into the real estate collapse, numbers look good for hiring in the first part of 2008. This encouraging news and more was released the day after Christmas in a survey created for USA Today and CareerBuilder.com by Harris Interactive. http://www.usatoday.com/money/workplace/2007-12-25-careerbuilder_N.htm?POE=click-refer
Harris Interactive found 29% of companies surveyed would add workers in the first quarter of 2008. This follows 30% of companies that added headcount in Q4, while 32% added workers in Q3 and an amazing 40% which added to their workforce in Q2 of 2007. An interesting side note, the companies expecting to reduce workers in Q1 is down from Q4 of 2007. Of the over three thousand hiring managers and HR professionals who participated, a solid 60% expect to hold their workforce steady in Q1 of 2008.
This data is in contrast to a similar survey, conducted Aug. 10 – Sept. 4 for CareerBuilder.com which stated “employers are scaling back their hiring plans… that pointed to a significant slowing in the U.S. job market.” Clearly the recession so wished for by the press isn’t upon us just yet.
